CHAPTER ELEVEN-Joe Spider, Angry Clown, Two bit Flyer and Maris
This is another collaborative effort publication. The others, as I have already stated, were collaborative with other artists but not dated or signed always. He was the crack editor for everything though. This is Maris and his San Francisco Artist Friend Barry. I believe the first half is Maris and the second half is Barry's (Joe Spider, Angry Clown and Two Bit Flyer). This comic book was made in the 70's.

This is a very nice tribute to Maris. I am Barry Garelick. I wouldn't say I'm an artist, but I did do Joe Spider cartoons and others. Maris was staying for a time in San Francisco in the fall/winter of 1977 which is when we put the cartoon publication together.
ReplyDeleteI met Maris in 1973; he happened to be visiting the area and he talked about visiting a friend in Petaluma. That may have been you. We hit it off immediately. At our first meeting I drew some Joe Spider cartoons for him on a napkin (we were at a sandwhich shop called The Haven, on Polk St). He said, in his Latvian accent "These are very great!"
Thank you for these memories. Maris and I were friends and I was very sad to hear of his death.
